The meal was okay and the service needed a little work, but at least I was around great company.
Thanks Weldon, Andy and Regina!

I bet most people have never heard of this restaurant. It’s a hidden resteaurant in Japantown – on top of Denny’s, inside Club Nishiki and through the sliding wooden door – that only offers about seven (?) counter seats. It sounds like a hole-in-a-wall restaurant, but it’s actually very nice and clean. It’s owned by a Japanese couple (from Japan) – the husband cooks, the wife serves. $85 for a pre-fixe menu that looks a little something like this:

The Holy Grail … of sake!

The Cream of the Crop: Monkfish liver pate – Sounds disgusting but tasted great.

Fit for a King: Dungenness crab salad that left me wanting more

A random basement-ish restaurant that stands out from the rest of the block with its bright color. The food was decent, but its price is why I give this restaurant my seal of approval. Where else can you get a filling meal (that isn’t fast food) for $5? Actually, where else can you get Southeast Asian cuisine at this value? My favorites were the corn fritters, murtabak, rendang beef and the wrapped salmon. Go with friends and just order one of everything on the menu.

Corn fritter

The chef is actually from Shanghai – you can’t get anymore authentic than that. They have a lot of Shanghainese dishes (cold dishes, dumplings, etc.) that you can’t find at just any Shanghainese restaurant. Their Shanghai dumplings were good, of course, but my favorite was their panfriend dumplings (aka shengjianbao). Unlike most restaurants, they actually use Shanghai dumplings and panfry it to a crisp.JONASAPPROVED!

Koo is one of the better sushi restaurants in the city. The fish is fresh and the rolls actually all have their own unique taste unlike many sushi restaurants out there. My favorite appetizer was the tuna tartare with guacamole under it, and all the rolls were delicious. I could have done without the eggplant or salted fish.
Thanks to Shannon, Andy, Debbie, Emerson, Daniel and Darryl for taking me out for dinner.
