Tekka Japanese Restaurant – The *Hidden* Japanese Restaurant – Jonas’ Birthday Dinner #5

Tekka

It’s so small and so popular that if you’re not among the first group (seats about 9 people) to eat there when it opens some time after 7pm, your best bet would be to come back around 9:30. It’s become so popular that people have to purposely give it bad reviews so others won’t go there.

If there’s one Japanese word you should know before eating at Tekka, it’s “omakase”:

Omakase (お任せ) is the Japanese word meaning “entrust” or “protect”. It is most commonly encountered at sushi bars, where the customer may request お任せお願いします omakase onegaishimasu (onegaishimasu meaning “please do me the favor”) to give the chef authority to prepare what the chef wants to make for you at the price that the chef sets. Brian and I were charged $50 each for all this food (and a little extra for the hamachi kama):

Pumpkin, Tekka

Sashimi, Tekka

Kappa – The *Secret* Japanese Restaurant – Jonas’ Birthday Dinner #2

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

I bet most people have never heard of this restaurant. It’s a hidden resteaurant in Japantown – on top of Denny’s, inside Club Nishiki and through the sliding wooden door – that only offers about seven (?) counter seats. It sounds like a hole-in-a-wall restaurant, but it’s actually very nice and clean. It’s owned by a Japanese couple (from Japan) – the husband cooks, the wife serves. $85 for a pre-fixe menu that looks a little something like this:

The Holy Grail ... of sake!
The Holy Grail … of sake!

Monkfish liver
The Cream of the Crop: Monkfish liver pate – Sounds disgusting but tasted great.

Dungeness crab salad
Fit for a King: Dungenness crab salad that left me wanting more

Jollibee – The McDonald’s of the Filipinos

Jollibee, home of fried chicken with gravy, mango pie and sweet spaghetti.

Jollibee is slowly expanding in California, but one of the original spots is the one in Daly City. Eating at Jollibee brings back memories from my childhood when I used to live in the Philippines. I even remember having a Jollibee toothbrush that I think came with a happy meal.

It’s food certainly has unique flavors, but my favorite is their spaghetti. I don’t usually eat fast food, but where else can i get sweet spaghetti at 11pm?

If you’re my friend and you haven’t been to a Jollibee yet, let me know and we can go some time.

The Shampoo – vlog quickie by jonas

Friday, November 9th, 2007

I’ve always been a drugstore brand person when it came to my hair. I’ve been switching back and forth between Infusium 23 shampoo/conditioner (because that’s the kind of samples that came with hair dye/bleach products back when I used to bleach my hair) and Aussie shampoo/conditioner (because I like the name).

Yesterday, I don’t know how it happened but I decided to go the salon approach and ordered a couple bottles of American Crew shampoo and conditioner. That’s four 33.8oz bottles total. I hope this $53.50 I just spent is worth it.

Jubili – The Pinkberry of SF

Tuesday, November 6th, 2007

It’s time to rejoice – Jubili is now open! It looks like a wannabe Pinkberry, and maybe it is, but it actually tastes different – Jubili’s frozen yogurt is not as tart (but still tarty). Plus, San Francisco is well known for its local shops and restaurant, and Jubili makes a nice addition.

Unlike Pinkberry, Jubili offers three flavors: vanilla and two fruit flavors. Get half and half, or get the two fruits swirled. Add fruits (I’ve always been fond of mangos and strawberries), add sweets (you HAVE to add their mochi!) or add cereal (corn flakes is my fave) for that extra crunch. Another items on the menu include cereal and blended drinks.

Another great thing about this place? They close at 11pm, even on weekends. The shop is kept at a nice warm temperate inside so even when it’s cold outside you can still enjoy some cold frozen yogurt inside.

You didn’t hear it from me:
-They’re talking about changing their hours to close earlier on the weeknights (maybe around 10pm) and later on the weekends (midnight).
-They’re working on getting free wifi to work.

JONASAPPROVED!
