Valentina Ristorante – Italian food in Bernal Heights – Part of Restaurant.com deal

Friday, December 21st, 2007

So Restaurant.com had a sale a week ago and I loaded up on gift certificates to random restaurants in the city. The deal is actually even better now with their 70% off coupon code GIFTS (purchase by 12/27) – You can get a $25 gift certificate for $3.

My first use of the gift certificate was at Valentina Ristorante.  Not bad. Not great, but not bad.

Experience CozmoDeck – $15 off your Bill at Participating SF/LA Restaurants

Friday, December 21st, 2007

I was doing last minute online shopping, and I was trying to figure out what to get my brother and his girlfriend aside from the Jersey Boy tickets, I stumbled upon CozmoDeck. What the hell is this?

Basically it’s a collection of 52 participating San Francisco or Los Angeles swanky restaurant gift cards. Each card has a $15 coupon off the entire bill (you have to spend $50 or more though to use the coupon). And if you use coupon code “af” you get 10% off your purchase.

For $65 you can customize your deck with any 52 restaurants from the list, but personally I think the $30 one is a better deal! I’m excited to get it, but I’ll probably have to give it to my brother and his girlfriend late since they still have to ship it to me. Boo.

And if you’re in the New York area, I know they have the cityshuffle which is a similiar concept, but more options.

Satura Cakes – Beard Papa, watch out!

Cream puff heaven. It’s like Beard Papa yet more low-key even with so much more to offer. Cakes, pastries, snacks and other desserts, all made just right. Not too sweet, good size, and tastes as good as they look. Cream puffs come in vanilla or green tea, strawberry shortcake is heavenly, green tea panna cotta is unique and left me wanting more …

I wish they had one closer to the city. For me to get to Satura Cakes I’d have to drive either to Palo Alto or Las Altos – that or fly to Hawaii.

Ay-Chung Noodles – My favorite Taiwanese Oyster Pancake

Monday, November 19th, 2007

When I got back home from Taiwan in the summer of 2004, there was one thing that I missed so much that it actually haunted my mind: oyster pancake (蚵仔煎 “oh wa jian”). It’s one of those love it or hate it type of food – the flavor is great but the texture is bizarre, and by bizarre I mean mushy.

I searched all over San Francisco for it. It was already hard enough finding a Taiwanese restaurant in SF, so finding the oyster pancake was even harder.

Alas, I found several restaurants that had it but it just wasn’t the same. It was either too hard or too mushy or too saucy or didn’t have enough sauce. Three years later, this weekend, I decided to drive all the way to Milpitas Square to try Ay-Chung’s oyster pancake. I found it through Yelp, and may I say, it’s the best I’ve had so far in the Bay Area.
