Sweet Things – Cupcakes and more

This bakery is planted inside of the CalMart grocery story in Laurel Village. Everything in there is great, but I hate paying for baked goods that aren’t made fresh that morning. I went in there two days in a row, back to back, and I saw the exact same items laying in their display – that chocolate cupcake with the saran wrap over it, that walnut tart sitting all alone…

So over the years, I’ve become a cupcake snob. Their carrot cupcake was good – moist, tasted like carrot cake, sweet. Their red velvet was off – it tasted like the carrot cupcake. Their black and white was good too – moist and sweet. Actually, all their cupcakes were a bit on the sweet side.

Mini cupcakes are a buck each, regular cupcakes are $2.something. If you like ‘em sweet, go to Sweet Things, but if you like your cupcakes a bit toned down, try again.

That Takes the Cake – The Sprinkles of SF

There’s a new cupcake shop in the city on Union St. called That Takes the Cake. Cute name, huh? Cute cupcakes too. Unfortunately, they were dry. I’ve had dry cupcakes before but these really takes the cake. Each bite caused the cupcake to crumble to pieces. They’re still new though and still have time to improve itself before others have a chance to try a bite.

On the bright side, they were hard-frosted like the kind you’d get from Sprinkles. Finally, hard frosted cupcakes in SF! Still, it doesn’t compare to Sprinkles and leaves me yearning for the real deal.

Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival 2007 – A taste of the country life

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

Imagine all the town locals gathering together for one of their most celebrated festivities of the year. I’m a city guy so the closest thing I’ve experienced to this is seeing Smallville’s local town fairs on TV. So this is what Kansas feels like!

Note to self: Go earlier next year or get ready for traffic. Traffic getting there was horrible but well worth the wait.

The festival was a true pumpkin galore: pumpking patches, pumpkin carvings, pumpkin pies, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin ice cream, pumpking magnets, pumpkin hats…

Tip: When buying food, make sure to go all the way to the end of the street where all the food vendors are set up. The food there is so much better than the ones in the local bakeries and restaurants along the way. That was a lesson well-learned.
