Cirque Du Soleil: KOOZA – The circus is in town!

Friday, November 16th, 2007

I got to see the press screening for KOOZA, a Cirque du Soleil show, in San Francisco. I’ve never been to a Cirque du Soleil before and the fact that I got to see it free made it even better.

I must admit – there were several mistakes throughout the show, but I’ll give them the benefit of a doubt that mistakes are natural. As for the acts – a lot of them I’ve seen before, like those three girls who twist and turn like rubber bands or the pickpocket magician who makes the balls disappear and reappear, and the clown acts dragged on a bit at times, but there were some really creative acts out there, like the two men in the double-wheeled hamster wheel-type contraption and the one-woman trapeze act.

Like I said, I’ve never been to a Cirque du Soleil show before but I get the feeling that other shows from the past were even better. Still, everyone should watch at least one show in their lifetime. The cheapest tickets out there are $55, and even those seats aren’t too bad.

Big City Improv – LOLing all night long

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

You know what sucks about going to a comedy show? Everyone else around you thinks their comedians. I don’t know how many sarcastic and witty (and perverted) remarks I heard that night, but I tried really hard not to let it get on my nerves.

Anyway, I was LOLing all night, and if there was space to move around, I might have actually ROTFLOLed a couple times. I’ve never been to an improv show before, but my friend Sam who goes every so often said it seemed slightly amateur. Still, she had a great time. The stage and seating was small (inside the Shelton Theatre) and cramped, the seats were lumpy, and I wasn’t too fond of a couple acts, but overall, I had a lot of fun. The cast was friendly and the show was interactive and called for audience members to participate a couple times.

The gang performs every Friday night at 10pm, and since everything is improv, meaning nothing is rehearsed, every show will always be something new. I believe the other popular improv comedy show in the city is BATS Improv. I’ll have to check that out.

Anyone want to go watch more improv shows with me?
