Minh Visits San Francisco

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Friday Connie, me, Andy (andyphan27), Corliss (c0rkie), Allie, Jon (lostsock21), Jonas (jonasapproved), and our guest of honor, Minh (ninjawesal) met up for dinner at Buca’s in San Francisco. This was the place where we encountered the worst service ever! It was so bad the floor manager gave us gift certificates to reimburse your $100+ meal!

Afterwards we headed to Bubble Lounge, and ended our evening at Horizon (what used to be Sake Lab).

Shanghai Dumplings in San Gabriel Valley – The Best of the Best

Friday, December 28th, 2007

I’m on a mission to find the best Shanghai dumplings (小籠包) out there and what better way to search than to try out all the popular spots in San Gabriel Valley. I made sure to visit the top 4 Shanghai dumpling restaurants the region had to offer, and three happened to be right next to each other in the Prospect Plaza.

JONASAPPROVED Top 4 Shanghai Dumpling Restaurants (linked to their Yelp reviews):
1. J & J Restaurant
2. Mei Long Village
3. Din Tai Fung (Old location)
4. Dragon Mark (一條龍)

According to Chowhound, I still have two more places to try (that aren’t so popular):
Giang Nan / De Yue Lou
Ho Ho Kitchen

traveling on bullet trains – day 4 of c0rkie’s japan adventure

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

you know what’s so kewl about the shinkansen aka bullet train?

is that they never ever had any casualties due to malfunctioning of these trains :D although people jumping in front of them is a common way to commit suicide. :(

i was just gonna end this entry with that sentence cause i have weird humor and thought it’d be amusing but that would have been a damper. no no… we can’t go and do that now, can we. lol!

so we left toyko for hiroshima and guess how long it took us? THE WHOLE DAY! ok yeh, no. that’s just me being dramatic haha! it took about 5 and a half hours on the train. still a bit of a trip.

unfortunately, i forgot my camera in our hotel room so no more pictures of day 4 :(
c0rkie’s japan adventure w/ photos will resume on day 5! :D

MTV’s EMA party – c0rkie’s hk adventure

Saturday, December 1st, 2007

this entry is long overdue. but better late than never! hehehe

I was invited to the EMA party that happened on the 15th of November. See what I mean when I said this entry is way overdue? lol

The event took place on the rooftop of the IFC Building in Hong Kong at the RED – Bar + Restaurant; with a 180 degree view of the Victoria Harbour and Kowloon.

The event had a breakdancing/skateboarding preshow, an EDC by Esprit fashion show (they were also the main sponsor of the event), and three performances lined up; Andy Hui (HK popstar), 24 Herbs (HK hip-hop group), and Mobb Deep (US hip-hop group)

The “glitz and glamour” of the industry definitely oozed out of this place; there were so many models towering over me lol! Way to make me feel like a midget among the crowd. Did you know male models are freakishly skinny? I was chatting with one of the fashion coordinators for the Esprit fashion show segment of the night and she pointed out how they don’t look particularly good naked. hahaha! Not sure if the same goes for the female models; probably not.

The MCs for the night were Lisa S. and a MTV Asia VJ – Asda. I see him on TV here when I turn on the MTV channel lol! That chick next to them in the above photo was just the person holding the raffle ticket bowl. I have no clue who she is.

I was surprised Andy Hui came out to perform considering his latest news in the media consist of his father passing away. According to the newspapers the next day after this party took place, Andy said he performed because he knew this would be broadcasted to the European audience. Hmm… interesting. So career move? Changing the focus back to his music? I’m not gonna analyze this too much lol But according to another industry person at the party, she found it a bit odd that Andy was performing because HK popstars don’t usually perform at events like these.

For those who have never heard of 24 Herbs, they are HK’s biggest hip hop artists right now. Some of the guys used to be a part of LMF, which might sound a bit more familiar to most? It was interesting hearing Canto rap, considering I’m used to listening to American hip-hip. The lyrics amused me a bit. Tell me if they amuse you as well (if you understand cantonese). Here’s a short clip of their performance:

And here’s Mobb Deep bringing US hip-hop to Hong Kong! It was interesting to see the HK crowd not really getting the “raise your hands in the air” and throwing up FU signs Mobb Deep was trying to get the crowd to do… Guess the crowd just wasn’t part of this scene. Regardless, the fans in the crowd generated enough noise and excitement.

And for your viewing pleasure! Here’s a clip of their performance :)
